Asphalt rumble strip installation
MMI performs asphalt rumble strip installation by means of long and short-line capacity and in a longitudinal direction on center line, edge line, and shoulder roadway portions
Milled rumble strips are utilized in many states nationwide, including Virginia, and were implemented by a design and research collaboration between the Federal Highway Administration, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, and local agencies. Designed as a countermeasure to assist with a variable of circumstances which pose vehicles to leave a travel lane, they assist drivers by audible and vibratory warning and have proven to minimize crashes and crash severity by improving driver reaction for a safer recovery.
The groove pattern and dimensions of milled rumble strips are defined by each state agency but are uniformly characterized as continuous or intermittent. Rumble strip application is not limited to a particular roadway type and designation. On lower volume roads, they are implemented in high-prone incident areas as a crash reduction effort or an additional safety measure to define travel lanes based on historical crash data.
